The Power of Vitamin A and How to Use It
Share
It wasnt until one of my clients, Sarah, told me she had never understood how to use Retinol before.
Sarah, who had tried every skincare product on the market, was in desperate attempt to reverse the signs of aging and clear her persistent acne. From high-end creams to natural remedies, nothing seemed to work. A few months ago, I recommended Sarah started Retinol into her evening routine. Skeptical yet hopeful, Sarah added it in just as I had explained and now Sarah understands the hype. Her skin appeared smoother, her acne scars were fading, and fine lines seemed less prominent. Sarah’s journey into the world of retinol opened her eyes to a skincare miracle that has now become a staple in beauty routines worldwide.
What is Retinol?
Retinol is a form of vitamin A that is widely used in skincare for its remarkable anti-aging and acne-fighting properties. Unlike many other skincare ingredients, retinol has been extensively studied and its benefits are backed by scientific research.
The Science Behind Retinol
Retinol works by promoting cell turnover and stimulating collagen production. As we age, our skin's natural cell renewal process slows down, leading to dullness, fine lines, and uneven texture. Retinol helps to accelerate this process, revealing fresher, younger-looking skin.
Benefits of Retinol
1. Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Retinol is known to boost collagen production, which can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. One study found that topical application of retinol significantly improved the appearance of fine lines after 12 weeks of use .
2. Improves Skin Texture and Tone: Retinol helps to smooth out skin texture and even out skin tone by promoting cell turnover. Research has shown that it can reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and improve overall skin radiance.
3. Fights acne: Retinol is effective in treating acne by preventing dead skin cells from clogging pores. A clinical trial demonstrated that patients using retinol experienced a significant reduction in acne lesions .
4. Minimises Pore Size: Regular use of retinol can help to keep pores clear and reduce their appearance over time.
How to Use Retinol
Starting Slowly...
For those new to retinol, it’s important to start slowly to minimize the risk of irritation. Begin with a lower concentration and gradually increase as your skin builds tolerance.
My favourite is the Medik8 Crystal Retinal - this uses Retinaldehyde which is much stronger than regular Retinol, but created in a way that is less likely to cause skin irritation. Medik8 have created a 'Retinal Ladder' which I just think is SO fabulous and always recommend this to my clients! Use code LFTFAFTERGLOWSKIN for 21% off!
Application Tips
1. Apply at night time ONLY. Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so it’s best applied at night.
2. Always follow up with a good moisturiser to prevent dryness and flaking.
3. Use sunscreen daily to protect your skin from UV damage, as retinol can make it more susceptible to sunburn.
Common Myths and Misconceptions
